On November 2, 2017, Madawaska Maliseet First Nation (MMFN) became the first Framework Agreement signatory in New Brunswick to ratify a community Land Code!  With a number of environmental and economic development projects currently being considered by the community, the MMFN Land Code vote is very timely.  The vote transfers the governance authority, over MMFN lands and resources, from INAC and  back to the community where it belongs.  This regained jurisdiction will provide for greater environmental, economic, and social protections and sustainability for the community and its lands.  MMFN reserve lands encompass an area of 312 hectares.  The MMFN membership consists of 546 members.  Impressively,  83% of participating voting members voted to approve the MMFN Land Code and 54% of all eligible voters cast their ballots!  Congratulations to Madawaska Maliseet on becoming the 78th Framework Agreement Signatory Nation to regain control of their lands and resources, and on becoming the second operational Framework Agreement  signatory First Nation in the Atlantic Region!
